El Catrin

Ever since my Gusto 101 post advertising my services as a professional third wheeler, I’ve been busy handling all these requests #DramaQueenHour. In all seriousness, nobody has contacted me (I know, I don’t get it either) BUT… my new roommate Rachel’s boyfriend was recently visiting from San Diego (welcome to Canada, Gordon!!!) so we decided to visit El Catrin.

a little intro to EL CATRIN

  • It’s a Mexican restaurant (duh)
  • It’s located in the Distillery District
  • Extremely stylish/trendy (look below at pictures)
  • It has an amazing patio 🙂
  • Awarded as the Best Mexican restaurant by Dine TO in 2014 (okay but real talk, what happened in 2015 and 2016… LOL jk it was really good)
  • After I typed that sentence I realized they won many awards so I’m just gonna copy and paste them here
El Catrin
take note of the “best first date restaurant”, gentlemen!!!!

El Catrin
thought I’d post the hours here…
El Catrin
You can grab a drink while you’re waiting in line!
El Catrin
Can we just all take a moment of silence to admire this beauty please? This is like a tumblr girl’s dream

DISTILLERY DISTRICT

Like I said above (if you’ve been reading… if not I’ll say it again #payattentionpeople), the restaurant is also located within the beautiful Distillery District so we got to walk around and check out some boutiques.

El Catrin

Since the Distillery District is also a tourist attraction and we had a tourist amongst us (*cough* Gordon*) (just kidding none of us are from TO), we decided to take some touristy pictures.

El Catrin
just casually waiting for these humans to realize that we’re trying to take a photo here like hell-o-uh #touristproblems
El Catrin
helen and I are finally alone to take the couple pictures we needed

And of course since I’m such a good third wheeler, I had to take some cute pictures for the couple of the day:

Distillery District
sooooo cuteeeee. These two lovebirds met in Germany!!! How cute is that?!??!?! #goals. Also they have a food instagram so go follow them: @raygoreats

FOOD & DRINKS

El Catrin
can’t remember what this was called but I think it was just a watermelon margarita??? #whoknows this was pretty good but not my favourite drink
El Catrin
Left to right: Original Mojito (MY FAVOURITE OUT OF ALL OF OUR DRINKS), Casamigos (we all thought that this was a bit salty for our liking… but could’ve just been the one that we got), water (also very good, highly recommend it!)
El Catrin
yummy yum yum.

El Catrin

These are their fish tacos that were made amazingly! However, according to Gordon, they’re not “authentic tortillas” because apparently they make it way better in the states since it’s corn-based. Anyway, moral of the story is if you live close in or close to Mexico these might not be that great for you but if you do not understand Tacos as well as Gordon then these are quite fantastic #runonsentences .

Disclaimer: the 4 of us only got one taco each because 30 minutes before getting here, we decided to have a “food pre” (who does that #us) so we pretty much all ate an entrée before getting here.

El Catrin
I’ve made it a tradition to take pictures of the name of the restaurant because why not #YOLO
El Catrin
These are actually heated!! #funfact

more couple pictures…

El Catrin
voted as the #1 couple by me and helen (that’s helen.. #veryobjectivevoting)

El Catrin

SUGGESTIONS FOR YOU…

If you’re thinking of visiting El Catrin yourself, here’s a few recommendations!

1. ORDER THE ORIGINAL MOJITO

This restaurant actually makes it PERFECTLY

2. MAKE A RESERVATION OR GO AT A TIME WHEN IT IS NOT BUSY

We went around 3:30pm-4pm so there was barely a line. When we walked out at around 6 the line was extremely long and it was outside! Make sure you make a reservation or you might be in line for awhile when you could have been doing something better with your life like watching Netflix (don’t say I didn’t warn ya)

3. MAKE TIME TO EXPLORE THE DISTILLERY DISTRICT

If you’re planning on making the trip to El Catrin, make sure you also make time to see the cool boutiques and other shops around there. We needed to head back shortly after the restaurant but there was actually so much to explore!

Hope this blog post was helpful and you visit this place soon!

Love,
Lisa

Gusto 101

gusto 101

Went to eat at Gusto 101 the other day to celebrate my friend Eric’s birthday #HappyBirthdayYouWeirdo! Eric came ALLLLLLLLLLL the way from Vancouver. He claims that he came here to tour around but LET’S BE REAL he missed me and flew right on over. Just kidding, he was on a vacation with his girlfriend. Btw I think this is a great time to mention that I’m a professional third-wheeler so if you’re looking for someone to third-wheel your date, I’m always looking for opportunities! You can find me on LinkedIn but if you would like more details, let me know and I can forward you my resume or we can set up a chat #Networking101.

gusto 101
Tip #1 from a professional third-wheeler: Sit IN BETWEEN the couple so you can pre-approve everything they do before they do it! Examples include conversation topics, hand gestures etc.

ANYWAY… more on the topic of this restaurant.

FOOD

The three of us only ordered three plates to share because the two of them ate beforehand (why would you do that). Overall the food is AMAZING… just look at how happy I am (below).

gusto 101
I’m happiest when there is food in front of me. Or behind me so I can turn around and eat that too

Here’s what we ordered:

gusto 101
okay technically we didn’t order this because it was free but HERE’S A PICTURE ANYWAY

gusto 101
this was also free but just in case you didn’t believe me that I was at Gusto 101
gusto 101
Mozzarella di Bufala buffalo mozzarella, roasted heirloom cherry tomatoes, pink peppercorns, cubeb pepper 15.99
– this was actually one of my favourite things! (out of the 3 things but anyway). The veggies were cooked perfectly and they were all very flavourful :’)
gusto 101
Polipo grilled octopus, chimichurri, olive tapenade, piquillo purée, lemon potatoes, fried capers 15.99
– Eric claims that this is “almost better than steak” or something.
gusto 101
Mafalde ai Funghi portobello, porcini, oyster mushrooms, truffle cream sauce 17.50
– personally I liked the other two things better but this was also really good!
gusto 101
as I’m staring at this picture I want to eat again.

CO-ED WASHROOM

Okay so just to let y’all know this place has a co-ed washroom. I found out because the minute I came out of the stall there was a guy washing his hands. We both looked at each other like “OMFG OMGO OMGOMG I F*#&$ED UP” and he literally looked at every stall and it was marked “W” (for women, FYI) until he saw the one stall labeled “M” and we both laughed and talked about it later. Btw, he admitted to me that even if it was a ladies room he still would have finished drying his hands #madrespect.

gusto 101
Love the vibes here! Hope this couple didn’t think I was creeping them (even though I was #jk #amI)

Overall, I loooooooved this place and I’m definitely going to go back to grab drinks (and food of course). Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto so you have to try it!!

Love,
Lisa

& shoutout to Eric because it was his birthday

Wilbur Mexicana

Today was the first official day of training and I finally (but really I just heard about it today) got a chance to try Wilbur Mexicana during lunch with some of my coworkers (wow I sound so adult right now… “coworkers” haha). Thankfully we missed the line-up so we got our food pretty quickly 😀 #thankgod #ihatewaiting #andscreamingchildren.

personal ratings

So my new friend Hitesh and I were talking and he suggested that I rate the place with more of a personal touch. Here goes:

Taste: Taste-wise, I love the tacos here. Didn’t really try anything else but the fish tacos were made really well :’) I’m the slowest eater and since we were on a time crunch I couldn’t really enjoy every bite like a human being should. On a scale of one to “this is gonna be my favourite food” it’s probably a 7?? Only because tacos aren’t my favourite food of all time but it’s still really good.

Ambiance: You can probably tell by the pictures that this place is pretty hip looking (aka instagram-worthy for all you social media lovers). Since the place was pretty big and people stop by for a quick bite, it was pretty easy for us to grab a seat. ALSO I’d like to mention that the washroom is very nice and not-smelly which is a bonus :’) #IHateBadWashrooms #IHateALotofThings

Date Spot: @Hitesh who gave me this idea LOL “from a scale of one to x number of dates…” this is probably more like a “I already know you pretty well so let’s just grab a quick bite to eat” kinda place. Not sure if it’s because we went on a weekday but the place still seemed pretty fast-paced & filled with people getting food for their lunch break… so PROBABLY not the best place to learn about your date’s childhood since so many people are walking in and out. But then again who am I to tell you where to date so do whatever you want #freecountry.

Price: This place was also pretty affordable! I believe everything on the menu was < $10 (unless you really stock up on tacos).

Overall, amazing place to go for lunch! If you’re in TO I highly recommend going here. Maybe I’ll even bump into you at lunch who knows :’) #OrNot #MaybeDontGoHere

Hope y’all having an amazing summer so far!!! (even though it’s still cold af but still better than two weeks ago when it was snowing)

Love,
Lisa

Night Out In Toronto

Got a surprise visit from Marga on Saturday!

I love introducing my friends to each other and I love it even more when they get along #YAY #WorldPeace101 #DramaQueenHour
I love introducing my friends to each other and I love it even more when they get along #YAY #WorldPeace101 #DramaQueenHour

Lucy also joined us shortly later, and we decided to admire the view of my balcony (THANKS ANDRIA) as well as taking a few pictures ;).

(SIDE NOTE #ADDmoment: You know what I just thought of?? Remember back in high school, the word “selfie” didn’t exist and we always used the word “camwhoring”…?! Like what happened to that word… it just disappeared. It’s like “selfie” = Kim Kardashian and “camwhoring” = Paris Hilton #JUSTSAYING #whereisshe) Anyway, we decided to have dinner at this restaurant that’s really close to my house called Hair of the Dog (really doesn’t make it sound appetizing but whatever). I wanted to try this place because every day when I walk to school/yoga/mall I literally see millions a bunch of people on their patio and it always seems packed (so it must be good right?).

The restaurant was super chill and the food tasted AH-MAZING. I kid you not, when I took a bite out of my grilled cheese I quietly whispered to it, “I know this probably means nothing to you, but it just means a lot for me to say this. I don’t really say this that often but when I mean it, I mean it. I just wanted to say… I love you…” #DramaQueenHour. No but seriously, you guys. You have have have to go to this place to try out their Butter Chicken Grilled Cheese. We also ordered their Baked Potatoes which was also really good (but not as good as the fabulous grilled cheese that took me on a trip to heaven and back).

IMG_4016 IMG_4015 Here’s the rest of the menu if you want to see!

After dinner, Kristina came over to get ready before heading out to Citizen for the first time (well… my first time. It’s probably her one millionth time ;D).

IMG_3998
reunited ❤

IMG_3992 So Marga decided to do that whole carpe diem thing and came out with us ;). And spent the night. And spent the next day at my place. #Oops #BadInfluence..? Since Marga didn’t have anything on her, I lent her my going out clothes, my shoes, my PJs… to the point where didn’t even have anything anymore. I didn’t even wear PJs because she wore them. She took my pillow in the middle of the night so I slept on nothing. She also took my blanket. Next thing I know my parents won’t even call me anymore, they’ll just call Marga. #DQH #Thanks Marga

IMG_3997
I should really get a spray tan before taking pictures with filipinos (well… technically Kristina’s half) #Whatever #SameThing
IMG_3994
blurry… just like that night… LOL

Overall, weekend well spent (since I went out instead of Netflixing). Speaking of Netflix… I started to watch the Mindy Project and I realized that me and Mindy could be BFFLs since she’s also quite the drama queen ;). (Who else watches the Mindy Project?!) Anyway, back to doing my homework now #ExcitingLife. Have an amazing week, y’all 🙂 Love, Lisa

Jabistro

Finally got a chance to go to Jabistro (aka the “best sushi in town”) with Janet, Tony, Victor, and Hysan 😀

IMG_3771
their menu’s also made on some really fancy paper
We started the dinner by ordering their lobster miso soup. I highly recommend this if this is your first time going (if not, order more of their sushi rolls!!!). There’s already a bit of lobster flavouring in the soup but I would also add a bit of the lobster meat inside.

IMG_3777
miso soup with lobster broth

IMG_3774
lobster for the miso soup
Here were some of the other things we ordered:

IMG_3776
ebi nanban (battered tiger shrimp with tartar sauce)

IMG_3665
aburicious (2 ebi, 2 saba, 2 salmon, 2 JaBistroll)
Our entire group really liked the 3rd roll (counting from the left), followed by the second one. The first roll has a little bit of jalapeño on top – and if you know me, I like my spicy stuff so this was definitely a plus 😀

IMG_3775
sashmi platter

IMG_3773
hokkaido salad (snow crab, inure, herb salted salmon)
IMG_3772

Tony: “I’ll have the less girly drink”  *steals my drink from me* #EveryTime

IMG_3827
nama (classic nigiri 7 pieces)
If you’re sharing this with friends, call dibs on the fatty tuna and the scallop 😉

IMG_3826
their high quality paper towels from the washroom ft. Hysan’s hand (we took a sample LOL)
We went to the movies after dinner and the theatre didn’t have paper towels in the washroom. This is why we should’ve taken like 3 samples.

IMG_3825
me and Tony made this plate ;). It’s the onions from the salad LOL. So if you’re looking for any food stylists, me and Tony are available for hire 😉
Since it was the first time for most of us, I thought that everything we ordered gave us a really good taste of the overall menu. If it’s your first time and you’re unsure of what to order, definitely give these a try! I also recommend going with more than one or two people because this way you can try more things without getting full faster and it also helps with the cost :).

If you’re going with less people and you want to order less, I would definitely recommend the rolls, the nigiri (both of these you have to order #NotToBeBossy #ButListenToMeBecauseImRight), the miso soup (if this is your first time), and the tiger shrimps. I wouldn’t worry too much about the salad just because you only have one stomach and you gotta prioritize what you eat #WiseWordsOfTheDay. The sauce on the salad was pretty good but other than that, a salad is a salad #TheresOnlySoMuchYouCanDo. Personally, I’m a huge fan of sashimi but I wouldn’t put the sashimi platter on my “must-order” list because I know that most people aren’t very big fans of sashimi (what is wrong with you btw), and more importantly, even if they are huge fans, not everyone is a fan of every type of fish (trying to think of the overall group utility #ImSoNice #Econ101).

IMG_3678

Even though we were all stuffed, I’m glad we still decided to buy popcorn with extra, extra, butter at the theatres #THANKSGUYS #LOVEYOU. We watched the Avengers and since I was itis-ing (I would use “food coma” like a true Vancouverite, but since I’m an Ontarioian now with my Roots sweatpants, I’ll stick to my Ontario slang ;D) so hard, I almost passed out during the movie.

If you’re in TO definitely try this place out!!! #ItsForYourOwnGood

Love,
Lisa
